Family Tree
Use Kingston's novel China Men to create a visual representation of Maxine Hong Kingston's family tree. Begin with her great grandfather that goes to Hawa'i. Pair wives with each China Man when the information is included in Kingston's narrative. Use a diagram to show each generation and their relationships with previous generations as well as future generations. The family tree should end with Maxine's own family.
Mapping the Chinese Immigration Movement
Use a large map of the world or draw one on butcher paper. Review the many journeys to and from China that Kingston's relatives made. Identify the locations other than America that Chinese immigrants moved to. Use different colors for the China Men in Kingston's novel and mark on the map to show the track each man took in their journeys.
