There are about thirty-seven people on the boat. It is hot during the day, and the passengers get badly sunburned. During the night it is cold. They have a limited amount of food, and cracks also develop which they have to try and patch up with tar.

Celianne is a pregnant girl of about 15 years of age. Her face is scarred from razor cuts. Celianne is all alone because her brother was taken by soldiers, and her mother left behind in Haiti.
4. Why is the first narrator happy there are no children on board?
The first narrator is happy there are not children on board because it would pain him to see the hopelessness and desperation in their faces.
