Essay Topics
Write an essay for ONE of the following topics:
Essay Topic 1
Though not terribly religious herself, Carolina never shies away from writing about the church. Brother Luiz is the main figure she mentions in her entries. He is a kind man who does his best to help the people of the favela. Write an essay that explores the theme of religion as it is presented in the diary. What do the people in the favela think about God? At what times do people turn to religion? Explain your rationale by providing examples from the book.
Essay Topic 2
The photographs of Carolina that are included in Child of the Dark were taken after her book was published. Each picture portrays the elements of daily favela life. Write an essay that explains what is going on in each picture. Make sure to include who is in the photograph and what they are doing. Think about what makes these photographs engaging and special. What about their composition and execution is the most interesting? Use examples from the book to support your argument.
Essay Topic 3
The pacing of Child of the Dark is very different than most books and autobiographies. Since the story is told through diary entries, certain events are embellished or forgotten by the author. Write an essay that explains why the pacing of Child of the Dark is significant. Which major events play a role in the rising action? What is the climax of the story? What is the falling action of the story? How is the pacing of the book unique when paired with similarly written autobiographies? Be sure to provide examples to support your opinions.
