Fern is horrified to find her father plans to kill the runt of the recent litter of pigs, and she accuses him of being unjust. She does not think it is fair for the pig to die just because it is small. Her father, on the other hand, does not seem to have given any thought to whether the pig has any right on its own to live. He takes it for granted that he can kill, raise, or sell his pigs as he sees fit.
