Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1-33)
Objective
Challenger Deep is a young adult novel by Neal Shusterman. The novel deals with themes of mental illness, the fluidity of reality, faith, and stereotypes. As the narrative is related largely from the first-person perspective of the protagonist, the reader sees into Caden Bosch’s mind and thoughts as they unravel due to an unspecified mental disorder. This lesson examines the first eight chapters of the novel. Students will analyze and discuss the narrative style of the book, the characters of Caden Bosch and the Captain, and the settings of Caden’s home and his imaginary world on the sea.
