Birdie is just a child when she finds herself in the position of having to "choose" a race. The objective of this lesson is to examine how Birdie views race as a child.

Lesson

1. As a class, discuss how Birdie sees herself in terms of her race. Whom does she look to for racial identity? What outside influences has she not experienced yet?

2. Divide students into groups of three or four to discuss the following and present a written summary of the group's views: Birdie has a white mother and a black father. How does she view the race of her parents as a child? How might having parents of two races affect Birdie's view of her own racial identity? How might Birdie's own skin tone affect her view of her own racial identity?
