Karen Cushman is an award winning American writer of novels for young adults and children. Some of her novels are "The Midwife's Apprentice", "The Ballad of Lucy Whipple" and "Matilda Bone". This lesson discusses the author of the novel "Catherine, Called Birdy", Karen Cushman.
Lesson
1) Library Research: Have students research the author, Karen Cushman. Explore the other works she has written, as well as her personal background. Take a look at interviews and the author's website to gain insight on her writing and where "Catherine, Called Birdy" fits in with her other novels.
2) Presentation: Have students get into pairs and prepare a presentation, using their research on Cushman and her canon. Have each group read an excerpt from different novels written by Cushman during their presentation. At the end of the presentations, have students compare the tone and style of Catherine, Called Birdy...
