The historical conflict in Northern Ireland plays a pivotal role in shaping the events of the novel, Cathedral. This lesson will give students an introduction to the history of the Northern Ireland conflict, also known as "The Troubles," and give an overview of the political, ethnic, and religious forces which shaped this period.
Lesson
1- Lecture: Prepare a lecture on the conflict of Northern Ireland, including the following key issues:
• Geographical overview of the United Kingdom
• Reasons for the conflict
• Reference to "The Troubles"
• Role of religion (Catholics v. Protestants)
• Relationship to the UK
• Attempts at peace
Have students take notes on each of the above topics. Upon completion of the lecture, have students quiz each other on the main topics.
