Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the symbolism of "the veil," and how and why spirits communicate through it. Rowell uses the veil to symbolize the divide between the living world and the deceased world. In Rowell's magical world, spirits can cross from the deceased world into the living one once ever 20 years to seek out a loved one and share important information. It is difficult for spirits to make this journey, and their time to speak is short. The two appearances of spirits to Simon in Part I of the novel also sets a large portion of the plot in motion.
