• This book is written in chapter sections in which a different character narrates each chapter from a first-person point of view. The book is also divided into three large "Books" sections and an Epilogue.
• Book One, Chapter 1 begins with narration from Simon Snow, the main character. Simon is on his way back to Watford school of magic for his final year of high school there. Almost all narrators tell their stories in the present tense.
• Simon is an orphan who resides is a home for orphans during the summer months. He loves Watford and is looking forward to returning, though he knows the year will be filled with danger and intrigue.
