Trail Food
The food that is eaten on the trail is mostly dried goods warmed over a fire. Bring some food that would fit this description and share it with the class. Have the students write about how they would feel living off of this for an extended period of time.
Dioramas
Split the class into groups and assign each group a different setting from the book (the Judge's house, the kennel, the ship, the woods, John's cabin, etc.). Have each group create a diorama of this setting along with a description of how this setting affected the plot of the book. Arrange these dioramas in chronological order.
Titles
Have the students break into groups. Have each group create a new and more fitting title for this novel. Make sure they are ready to defend their choice.
