Objective
Objective: Prologue The setting, both physical and historical, of Call It Sleep is vital to the story. It is set in a time when there are many immigrants flooding into America but when European immigrants were not necessarily welcomed--particularly those of Jewish descent. The New York setting enables the characters to interact with many different types of people and be exposed to a variety of experiences. The objective of this lesson is to define the term "setting" and to explore the setting of Call It Sleep and its importance to the story.
1. Define "Setting": Ask the class what "setting" means. Write ideas on the board as they are offered. Have a student read the dictionary definition. Offer clarification as necessary.
