• She is chewing on ginger to chase away nausea and is reflecting on the fact that her uncle is chasing her.
• Summer 1981—A 19-year-old boy who has renamed himself LeeRoy is heading down the same road, going to Amarillo to meet cowboy champ Bruce Ford and ask him for a job.
• Hằng— On the bus, Hằng reflects on how she convinced her cousin, En-Di (“Angie”) to drive her to the bus station before Hằng’s uncle came back.
