Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background and personal interest in the subject matter reflected in the novel. Students will discuss facts about the author that are included in the book. Students will research information about the author and analyze why she may have written Burnt Sugar.

Class Discussion: Who is the author of Burnt Sugar? Where is she from? How old was she when the book was published? How was her work received by the public? What other works has the author written? How might the author’s background influence your reading of the book?
