Food is a serious issue for the group and for the children left on their own in Stratton. Explain how some of the meals are gathered and prepared. What other options might the group have had in their efforts to provide food for themselves?

Who is Ellie? What do you learn about Ellie from the story? What kind of character is she? What are her strengths and weaknesses? Is she believable? Likeable? Give examples to support your answers.

Essay Topic 3

Describe the "tip." What is it? What are Ellie's memories of it from before the war? What are some of the items she says would be there if archaeologists were to dig it up? What are some of the things they find there on the day they get into the furniture van? Why are they there that day?
