Rosa is only fourteen years old. She is dressed in her school uniform. However, instead of being at school, she is at a prison to visit her mother. It is said that both of her parents expect to be arrested. This is a serious issue for a fourteen year old girl to have to deal with.

The Burgers are a Caucasian family living in South Africa, where apartheid rules. They are against apartheid and fight openly against the government which causes them to be jailed.

3. What is the relationship between Conrad and Rosa from the time they met to the end of the first section of the book?

Rosa meets Conrad and invites him to one of the cookouts at her home. They go out to eat and become somewhat involved. He is around during her father's trial when he is in South Africa and not traveling. Later, Rosa takes a trip with him to a summer cottage where they have sex. Though she dates a Swede, she returns to Conrad as it is said that she moved into a cottage somewhere.
