Objective
Students will consider the differences between a novel and a story, as well as dissecting the ways in which the writer of a short story, such as Wolff in his creation of "Bullet in the Brain," uses different methods to create a work’s meaning than does a novelist.
Not only is the story of "Bullet in the Brain" only 41 paragraphs in length, but it also unfolds in real time, meaning that at the very most, the entire story takes five minutes to unfold. Obviously, a longer work such as a novel requires different techniques and methods than does a short story such as Wolff’s "Bullet in the Brain." Every word within the story is carefully and purposefully included, so that the reader can count on being able to analyze the story almost like the way in which one would analyze a poem.
