Lesson 1 (from Omaha)

Objective

Omaha Warren Buffett was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. He came from a family of business people on both sides. His father had been a stock broker and Congressman. The objective of this lesson is to learn about the environment in which Warren grew up.

Lesson

1. Does it seem to you that Warren Buffett had normal interests as a child? Have each student respond by writing an in-class paragraph.

2. The occupation of the parents usually influences the interests of young children. This was also true of the young Warren. Allow the students to form discussion groups of six to discuss this issue. Have them relate it to their own lives.

3. Allow the students to look for pictures of Omaha in the 1920s and 1930s. What was the state of the economy in each of these periods. How was the Buffett company affected? Allow the students...
