At the beginning of a new novel, it is helpful to introduce the author, the novel, and some general information to assist students in their reading. The objective of this lesson is to introduce the novel, especially its setting in time, and to learn some biographical information about the author.

1) Class Discussion: What do you know about this author? This book? Have you read anything else by her? The story in this book took place in the late 1930's and 1940's. What do you know about that time period in history? What other events are going on in the world? The family immigrates from Barbados. Where is Barbados? What do you know about it? What do you know about immigration in the early 20th Century?
