From the very beginning of the book, it is clear that Fyodor is not the most shining character. His mistreatment of women and lack of attention towards his sons only hint at the extent of his selfish nature. This lesson will discuss the portrayal of Fyodor in the book.
Lesson
1. Group Activity: Have the class split into groups of four and create a list of the descriptions given to Fyodor in the first part of the book. After creating your list, have one member from each group share your findings with the rest of class.
2. Class Discussion: How is Fyodor's fathering described at the beginning of the book? What values does Fyodor seem to hold? What is telling of Fyodor's character based on his interaction with Zosima?
