Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 35))

Objective

The objective of this lesson is for students to compare and contrast Michael and Francis. These two characters are brothers, and Francis is Michael's older - and tougher - brother. Francis has a reputation in the boys' neighborhood in Scarborough, Canada (known as "the Park") of being someone who can hold his own and is not afraid to stand up for himself. Michael is much shyer and less sure of himself. Both brothers feel protective towards their mother, Ruth, an immigrant from Trinidad who struggles to make ends meet.
