"Bronx Masquerade" is a novel by Nikki Grimes which centers on Mr. Ward's English class of mixed-race high school students and the class's Open Mike Fridays, in which they read their poetry. Nikki Grimes effectively uses this backdrop to showcase poetry written from the perspectives of each of the eighteen students. In this lesson, students are introduced to the book and will research the author Nikki Grimes.

Lesson

1) Teacher Lecture: Introduce the book and author to the class. "Bronx Masquerade" is a novel by Nikki Grimes which won the 2002 Coretta Scott King Award. The novel tells the story of an English class inspired to overcome stereotypes through poetry, and examines themes of friendship, loneliness, cultural identity and abuse.
