Lesson 1 (from Chapter 1)
Objective
Students will “preview” the text and discuss their first impressions of the book with the class. Students will also examine their process in deciding in whether or not they want to read a book and what can be gained from reading a book that does not appear initially desirable.
Lesson
Pre-Activity: Have students “free write” for five minutes on how they choose books to read and how they know when a book they’ve chosen is one that they will enjoy and finish.
Class Discussion: As a class, discuss how a reader may evaluate a book. How do readers decide that a book is “good”? Encourage students to share ideas that came up during their free write.
