1. Describe the narrative style in Braiding Sweetgrass. Why is this narrative perspective important?

With a few exceptions, the narrative in Braiding Sweetgrass comes from the first-person perspective of author Robin Wall Kimmerer. This allows the author to give both a scientific outline of different species as well as her thoughts on different subjects, such as the importance of reciprocity, the history of her people and their culture, and her emotions as an indigenous mother of two.

2. Who is Skywoman and what is the basic outline of her story?

In a common Native American Creation story, Skywoman was the first human on earth. She was cast from the sky to the earth and the animals helped her survive by taking her to Turtle, upon whose back she rested. The animals brought earth from the bottom of the ocean, which Skywoman spread on Turtle's back. Skywoman then planted all of the plants of the earth on Turtle's back, which is why native peoples call the planet Turtle Island.
