Lesson 1 (from Planting Sweetgrass)
Objective
This lesson introduces students to the nonfiction book Braiding Sweetgrass. Students will research author Robin Wall Kimmerer, read the Preface and “Skywoman Falling,” and explore indigenous Creation stories and their impact on Native American culture, perceptions, and actions. The author uses the story of Skywoman in this first essay to demonstrate a substantial difference in the perceptions of nature from indigenous peoples and Western settlers, and to demonstrate the power of reciprocity.

Research Activity: Take time in class to conduct research on author Robin Wall Kimmerer. What subjects does Kimmerer specialize in as a college professor? Where does she teach? What scientific articles and books has she written? What are common themes in her works? Reserve these notes for the homework assignment.
