Objective
The objective of this lesson is to focus on the author's tone. Students will consider Alexis Hall's humorous tone, which is used even when the characters discuss traumatizing or disturbing events. For instance, students will consider the role of humor in Luc's thoughts about his unique family situation.
Lesson
Group Assignment: In a group, work together to find passages in the text that specifically use a humorous tone. Look for at least one example that pairs humor with a sad, disturbing, or traumatic topic. Share your chosen passages with the class.
Class Discussion: What mood do the passages you chose in your groups evoke? How do those passages do that? What words elevate the humorous tone? How do tone and content contrast in this novel? What is the effect on the reader? What should we perceive about Luc based on this tone?
