• After the table of contents and before Part 1, the book includes an Author's Note explaining the author's, Garrard Conley, research process as culling material from LIA ("Love In Action") literature, personal interviews, as well as the Conley's personal experience at LIA. Conley explains that names have been changed to protect certain figures from the his life.

• In the introductory pages, Conley quotes Flannery O'Connor's short story, Revelation, as well as a quote from an interview with John Smid, a former leader of LIA.

• Conley includes a timeline of gay events, beginning with the American Psychological Association's declassification of homosexuality as a mental illness in 1973.
