Objective: "Boule de Suif" in occupied France during the Franco-Prussian war. The purpose of Lesson 1 is to examine the setting of "Boule de Suif."
1) Class Activity: Research the Franco-Prussian war. What were the causes and what was its outcome? Maupassant set "Boule de Suif" in 1871 in the cities of Rouen and Totes in occupied France in order to portray the many facets of war, including the French army, Prussian soldiers, and subjugated citizens. Create a timeline of the war, and include the significant settings in the story.
2) Class Discussion: Why is the setting of "Boule de Suif" important? What is the geographical, political, and social landscape of the story in relation to the conflict?
3) Writing Activity: In addition to the war-time setting, the winter backdrop influences the tone and mood of the story. Write a 2-3 paragraph response to how the weather influences the story and characters...
