Objective

The opening scene in BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY takes place on a battlefield in Vietnam. Ron Kovic has just been wounded. Discuss the battlefield scene and its implications for the story.

Lesson

1. Discuss the battlefield scene during which Kovic is injured. What might it look like? How would the Americans and Vietnamese be dressed? What kind of formations might they use? How would you have reacted to being in that scenario?

2. Write a short story from the point of view of Ron Kovic or one of the other injured soldiers.

3. Draw a depiction of the battlefield as it is referred to in the book.

4. Homework: Read THE RED BADGE OF COURAGE, one of the most accurate fictional books on war.
