Booked is written in quick-moving verse that is presented in the present tense and conveys an immediacy of experience. Many of the poems are written in the second person, as if they represent the main character’s internal thoughts, like a journal, but more immediate for being stripped down to the most effective narrative parts.There is some variety in the poems, and some are written with less of a personal voice, but for the most part, the book conveys a young boy’s sense of exuberance and irreverence.

Nick Hall, the main character, is a confident kid who knows that he and his friend Coby are the best soccer players around. Nick is not too full of himself, though, for when he is around April, he is tongue-tied and halting in speech and hesitant to act.
