Reading a play can be a new and challenging experience for students. This lesson will look at the differences between a play and a novel.
Lesson
1. Group work -- Get into groups and look through Scene 1. Make a list of all the differences you see between this scene and the first chapter of a novel you are familiar with.
2. Class Discussion -- What are some differences each group noticed while comparing this play to a familiar novel? What is the purpose of a play? What will be different about the characters' dialog and also about the structure of the play compared to a novel? What are the functions of the stage directions? Would a play have the same meaning without stage directions?
