The book begins with William recounting the day of "canceled expectations" when he learns that his college teaching job is over because of declining enrollment. He lies awake in bed that night and has an epiphany: He will travel the roads of America and discover something about the land he lives in. This lesson will explore William's epiphany.
Lesson
1) Class Discussion: The moment William has "the idea" he realizes that if a person can't "make things go right," then he can "at least go." Discuss with the class the meaning of "epiphany." What is William doing when his epiphany occurs? What essential understanding does he realize at this moment? What plan does it lead him to formulate? Discuss with the class what William means when he says he "could quit trying to get out of the way of life"?
