• The narrative is prefaced by a prologue, containing a prophecy delivered to Chief Powhatan in 1607.
• The prophecy states that a tribe from Chesapeake Bay will build homes in the Powhatan kingdom, and destroy the kingdom in a series of three battles.
• The narration begins in London, England in 1606, where Samuel Colliers finds himself stealing a locket belonging to his late mother.
• Samuel explains that he is an orphan, and that his late mother had been widowed by a man (Collier’s father) who was an alcoholic.
• Samuel lives on the street, where he sleeps in garbage heaps, and goes to sleep with his mother’s locket around his neck
