Lesson 1 (from Prologue - The Orphan)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the author’s background and personal interest in the subject matter reflected in the book. Joyce Carol Oates is an American writer and novelist. Oates taught as a professor at Princeton University until 2014 and currently teaches short fiction at UC, Berkeley.
Lesson
Class Discussion: Who is the author of Blonde? How was the book received? What else has the author written?
Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and ask them to compile a list of facts about the author, encouraging them to include information relevant to the book's themes. Regroup and share with the class.
Individual Activity: Choose one fact about the author that you think is most important to understand in reading the book. Describe how you think that fact will impact the characters, themes, or narrative structure.
Homework: Read the first chapter...
