In this section, Cotton has a disturbing dream in which he is shot in the head by his mother. The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the themes of the dream, and to discuss what symbolism might be found in its events.

Lesson

1.) Class Activity: As a class, create a list of the important elements in Cotton's dreams. Which items do you think hold the possibility for greatest symbolism? Why?

2.) Group Activity: Divide the class into groups of 3 or 4 students and assign each group an item from exercise one to analyze. What might this item symbolize in Cotton's dream? Given the context of the entire first section, what foreshadowing might be found in this item's presence? Have each group give a five minute presentation of their findings.
