Chapters 1 & 2
• Cotton has a dream that he and fellow campers are herded into a fenced-in field and shot. Moments before his death, Cotton realizes that the shooter is his mother. He wakes in a sweat.
• Realizing that Lally Two is missing from camp, Cotton organizes a search party. When they find Lally Two, they take a vote to decide whether or not, as a group, they are ready to undertake a dangerous mission to free the buffaloes.
Chapters 3 & 4
• The boys gather their belongings for the quest. Some of the boys bring inappropriate items not necessary to complete the mission. The boys attempt to steal a car but it gets stuck on the road. Instead, they saddle horses and leave camp that way.
• In a sequence of flashback events, the reader learns of Lally One's terrible temper, and the naming ceremony at camp in which Cotton's group was named...
