Part 1

Black, White, and Jewish: Autobiography of a Shifting Self is a memoir by Rebecca Walker which relates her coming of age as a young biracial woman. Occasionally, Walker relates a scene from her adulthood to the events in the book, but largely, the biography covers her childhood through young adulthood. Rebecca Walker (born Rebecca Leventhal in 1969) is an American writer and activist whose works focus on multicultural identity, enlightened masculinity and third-wave feminism. In this lesson, students are introduced to the book and will research its author and protagonist, Rebecca Walker.

1) Teacher Lecture: Introduce the book and author to the class. Black, White, and Jewish: Autobiography of a Shifting Self is a memoir by Rebecca Walker. Walker was born in 1969 to African-American author Alice Walker and Jewish-American civil rights lawyer Mel Leventhal.
