Map It

Have the students find La Paz on a map, then divide the class into groups to map how many miles La Paz is away from where the class resides. How long would it take to travel there by boat, foot, car, or airplane?

This activity could be extended or varied by having the class look up other prominent places mentioned in the story such as the Vermillion Sea. Then have the class determine how far these places are from La Paz and the students' home towns.

Manta Diablo

Have the students draw their own renditions of the Manta Diablo as described in the text.

Point-of-View

Have the students rewrite the story from the Manta Diablo's point-of-view.
