Objective

October 28-November 7, 1959 (pages 1-17): Intro to the Civil Rights movement. The objective of this lesson is for students to understand the Civil Rights Movement as context for the book, Black Like Me.

Lesson

1) For class discussion: Ask students what they already know about the Civil Rights movement in the South. What states were involved? What types of interactions took place? Was this a peaceful or violent atmosphere? What was accomplished by the movement?

2) Individual activity: K-W-L Chart. Have students divide a sheet of paper in their notebooks into three columns, titled "Know," "Want to Know," and "Learned." In the first column, have students write down what they already know about the Civil Rights movement.
