The objective of this lesson is to examine the term 'Black Boy Joy' and why joy is important. The term 'Black Boy Joy' was coined by Danielle Young in 2016. It embodies the fun, excitement, and joy of boys growing up "in and out of the hood" (2).

Class Discussion: Why has Mbalia never liked watching the news? What type of stories did he always see and how many of the stories featured Blacks like him? What three secrets does Mbalia reveal in the Introduction? How are those secrets important in the stories in Black Boy Joy? Who coined the term, Black Boy Joy? What does the term encompass? How should the stories of "the sheer fun of growing up as boys in and out of the hood" (2) be told? How should they be highlighted? How should they bring joy? Why is joy so important?
