THE ATTACK - In this chapter it is revealed that Lydia was attacked by Lieutenant Du Boise when Silas was working for the underground. Because of this, there is deep pain and resentment in her marriage. The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the events of the attack, and how it was handled by all who were involved.

Lesson

1) As a class, create a timeline of events for the attack in the first chapter of the novel. When did the attack occur? How long did it take for Du Boise to be punished for his actions? How does the timeline of the attack factor into the first scene in the novel?

2) Divide the class into groups of three or four students to research "The Underground" in South African history. Why might Silas have worked for this organization? How would his involvement...
