• Birds Without Wings is largely set in Eskibahçe, Anatolia, which is a small, fictional town in the Ottoman Empire at the turn of the Twentieth Century.

• This epic novel incorporates a variety of characters, narrative perspectives, and viewpoints, shifting chapter by chapter, often indicating who narrates through the chapter titles.

• Chapter 1 is titled “The Prologue of Iskander the Potter” and this narrative comes from the first-person perspective of Iskander as he looks to the past.

• The first chapter also establishes foreshadowing that will connect to the end of the novel, as Iskander says the story is about how Ibrahim went mad and how the beautiful Philothei tragically died.
