Objective

Objective: In Act 1, Scene 1, Eugene outlines three goals to accomplish before the end of the war. The objective of this lesson is to examine Eugene's stated goals and their role in the play.

1) Have each student write down a goal that he or she has for the next two years. Then, have a student read aloud to the class the portion of Act 1 where Eugene lists the three goals he has during the war. Have the students share their own goals with the class, and compare the students' goals to Eugene's goals. How are they similar and different? Why might Eugene's goals be different? What do they say about him?

2) Have each student write a list of attributes of Eugene's character that are indicated by his goals. Go around the class and have students share the character attributes they've identified and how they're related to Eugene's goals...
