Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1 – 4)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore author Jen Beagin’s background and understand the context the author’s background can offer before reading. Students will perform some biographical research and look for areas in the author’s background that might be relevant to the text. For instance, Beagin lives in the town of Hudson, which may give the book’s setting more credibility.

Class Discussion: Who is the author of Big Swiss? Where is the author from? Does the author’s own experience living in Hudson add more credibility to her writing? What is the author’s educational background? What else has this author written, and what awards have they won?
