Lesson 1 (from Section 1: Page 1-2)
Objective
The purpose of this lesson is for students to analyze the importance of setting in the novel.
There are two key settings in the text that act almost as characters in and of themselves: The sky in Section 1 and the hospital room in Section 2 and 3. Dahl sets the reader up to really see, feel, touch, smell, and hear these places. The reader is able to experience these settings as if they are there, adding to their importance in the text.
Lesson
Individual Activity: Using a graphic organizer, have students identify the two key settings in the text: The sky and the hospital room. Make a list of all of the sensory details that Dahl uses when he describes these places. Use a graphic organizer to help organize your thoughts. Share with the class when you are finished.
