Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Jaouad's path to her initial cancer diagnosis. At the end of her college years at Princeton, Jaouad began experiencing terrible, persistent itching that puzzled doctors. She was also constantly fatigued, but she attributed her tiredness to her busy work, school, and social schedules. More than a year passed before Jaouad's symptoms worsened to the point where doctors suggested more extensive testing, which ultimately led to the discovery of her leukemia.
Lesson
Class Discussion: What were some of Jaouad's early symptoms? What are some reasons it took doctors so long to figure out her diagnosis? How did Jaouad's mysterious symptoms affect her relationship with her parents and with Will, her boyfriend, before her diagnosis?
