• Chance loves working in the Old Man's garden and compares the lives of plants to the lives of people.
• Chance's mother died in childbirth and had brain damage of some kind, just as Chance does.
• An employee of the Old Man living in the house is a maid from another country who watches television but does not understand most of what she watches.
• Chance preferred the former maid who lived in the house. He calls this woman "black Louise".
• Chance has never left this house or the garden to venture into the outside world.
• In addition to the garden, television is Chance's other main obsession.
• A maid from abroad who works for the Old Man and leaves Chance his meals, cannot understand television very well, though she does watch it.
• Chance believes that when he changes the TV channel, he changes himself.
