Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 53))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the settlers' motivations in founding the colony at Plymouth. In Part I, Alice Bradford paints of picture of poor economic prospects for herself and other British immigrants in Holland - many of whom had settled there to try to break away from the Church of England, which they felt was too liberal. The main motivations for the settlers, including William Bradford, the first Governor of Plymouth, were so that they could practice their more restrictive religion in peace and so they could try to garner more financial security for themselves.
