The objective of this lesson is to discuss the Golden Glove boxing tournament, and what is revealed about boxing. Cassius Clay was participating in the Chicago Golden Glove boxing tournament in 1958. He was an amateur boxer who had won several bouts in his home state of Kentucky.

Class Discussion: What tournament was Cassius participating in during February 1958? What bouts had he won that led to the Golden Gloves tournament in Chicago? What did Cassius believe about his chances of winning? How did Cassius compare himself to Joe Louis or Sugar Ray at his age? How did the first two bouts go for Cassius? Why did he not win the tournament? What did Cassius share about boxing and how it was run in his poems? What is revealed about boxing?
