Activities:
• Have the students hold a class debate on the idea that this chapter demonstrates the idea that the theme of loneliness is the key to understanding the underlying developments throughout the book.
• Have the students discuss how they would feel if they were to bring home a dog they had found reeking havoc in a grocery story to their parents. Create a list of what this might impact.
• Have the students work in pairs to create a position statement on how what they think Opal should say to her father when she shows him Winn-Dixie for the first time.
Homework:
Write a paragraph describing what you think will happen when Opal comes home with the dog and no groceries.
